McQuire Rens & Jones (pvt) Ltd. organized a Business Symposium under the caption of “Riding the Waves of Commercial Turbulence” on 19the January 2009 at TransAsia Hotel,
Colombo
.
The purpose of the symposium was to create an accurate awareness among the audience, numbering around 100 persons, about the global economic crisis and it’s effects on
Sri Lanka
. The audience comprised mainly of Chairpersons, CEOs, and directors of organizations.
Speaking on the subject, Nalin Jayasuriya, Managing Director & CEO of McQuire Rens & Jones (Pvt) Ltd asked the question, “How many companies are taking a re-look at their processes and systems? What waste and lavishness can be eliminated through proper checks and balances?” He continued to say that the year 2009 will be a year of reckoning… a year where companies will have to get their people on board and together face the dark economic challenges looming ahead. He said that the intense impact of the recession taking over
Japan
, Europe and the
USA
has not hit the Asian Region yet, but he stated that we can expect impact in April 2009 or so. This is a time where we have to look at the situation philosophically in a holistic manner and share knowledge and know-how on how to ‘weather the storm’ so that the private sector and corporations can consolidate and stand firm in the face of an impending ‘never before’ economic down turn in our country. Hence, we must focus on waste management and cost reduction without jeopardizing quality, says Jayasuriya.
The other speakers at the Symposium were Mangala Boyagoda, Managing Director, Wealth Lanka Management (Pvt) Ltd., who spoke on “IMPACT OF THE GLOBAL RECESSION ON SRI LANKA’S ECONOMY”, Achyut Reddy, Managing Director, Fonterra Brands Lanka Ltd., on “A RE-LOOK AT BRANDING & MARKETING IN THE FACE OF ECONOMIC TURBULENCE”, Ronnie Peiris, Group Finance Director, John Keells Group, on “ESSENTIALS OF FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AT THE CORPORATE ROCK FACE”, Chandra Jayaratne, Former Chairman, Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and Sri Lankan of the year 2001, on “CORPORATE LEADERSHIP TO STEER THROUGH ECONOMIC DOWNTURN” and Rajendra Theagarajah, Managing Director & CEO, Hatton National Bank Ltd., on “FINANCIAL SECTOR SUPPORT FOR BUSINESS CONSOLIDATION”
